Amanda Jones – 40 Under 40

Age: 26
Kids: No
Occupation: Costume Director/Designer for Ocala Civic Theatre
My grand goal in life: My grand goal in life is to create art that people can see themselves in. I believe good theatre should be a mirror for the audience.
When not working, I: When not working, I enjoy exploring the many springs and parks of Central Florida, reading, crocheting, and spending time with my family and pets.
What I like most about living in Ocala: I love that Ocala has such a rich community of artists and musicians.
My biggest pet peeve: My biggest pet peeve is when people talk to me without getting my attention first (let me take off my headphones please!)
One word that summarizes my philosophy of life: Understanding
My greatest strength is: Collaborative resourcefulness. My approach to my career revolves around communicating with a team of artists and technicians to creatively solve problems.
If you could have a superhuman power, it would be: Teleportation! On top of how much easier it would make my life, it would also let me visit my family in Tennessee whenever I want.
Community cause nearest my heart: Youth theatre education. I could wax poetic about the importance of kids exploring their passions in safe and fun ways!
A guilty pleasure of mine: Wawa frozen cappuccinos
People who know me say I am: Creative, compassionate, and always learning something new.
Personal achievement for which I am most proud: My Master’s degree was the hardest work of my life thus far and one of the most enlightening experiences I have been privileged to have.
Favorite part of my profession: My favorite part of my profession is rendering costume designs. Many may think this is my whole job- but it’s only a small part of what I do. However, creating renderings and figuring out my plan for a show is a mixture of meditative and joyous for me. I feel the most myself when I’m sketching.
If there is one thing I indulge too much in: Self-doubt
Top three things on my bucket list: I don’t have a bucket list! I am aiming to make the most of each day as it comes, and to see and experience as much joy, wonder and love as I can with the time I have.
